A Message from Rev. Thomas J. Burke, Administrator of the Catholic Community of the East End of Pittsburgh- Parishes of St. Bede, St. Charles Lwanga and St. James-Wilkinsburg: "Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors and friends from Tree of Life in Squirrel Hill. We pray as brothers and sisters for healing and peace. Love God, Love Neighbor! With God, All Things Are Possible."
As we are all devastated by this morning’s massacre at Tree of Life Congregation, my heart and my prayers are especially lifted up for our Jewish sisters and brothers and the law enforcement officers who rushed into harm’s way. The relationship between Tree of Life and the Diocese of Pittsburgh has been close over many years. Anti-Jewish bigotry, and all religious and ethnic bigotry, is a terrible sin. As we pray for peace in our communities and comfort for the grieving, we must put prayer into action by loving our neighbors and working to make “Never again!” a reality. May God free us from fear and hatred, and sow peace in our lives, our communities and in the world. Click

We will again celebrate our tradition of placing roses on the altar for All Saints Day and All Souls Day in memory of deceased loved ones. Suggested donation $2.50 per name. Place form in offertory basket or drop off at the rectory.
RCIA is the process through which adults (and children and teens) become members of the Catholic Faith. If a person has never been baptized or, if a person has been baptized in another Christian Church and would like to consider a faith journey in the Catholic Church, they are invited to attend.
The Catholic Community of the East End of Pittsburgh’s Fall Harvest Dinner was a great success! Parishioners from St. Bede, St Charles Lwanga, St. James came together to celebrate a new beginning for our parishes
After three years of planning meetings, attending various information sessions and reading news articles in the Pittsburgh Catholic and Post-Gazette, Bishop Zubik’s implementation of the On Mission for the Church Alive is here. This week we begin a new journey across the entire Diocese of Pittsburgh working together with our neighboring parishes and combined resources, to offer vibrate liturgies and serve those in need to be the “Church Alive.”
Life is a choice. Each day we have many decisions to make and these decisions speak a whole lot about who we are and where we are going. One of the Old Testament Prophets said “As for me and my house I will serve the Lord.” Solomon as well as the “rich man” and the disciples had to make a decision of who they were going to serve.
Today on this 2nd Sunday in October, we celebrate Children and Youth. Our special celebration will be held at the 11: 30 Mass. But today’s gospel passage has much to say about the values we impress upon our children in this era of materialism and wealth.
We are recruiting volunteers from all three parishes in the Catholic Community of the East End of Pittsburgh, St. Bede, St. Charles Lwanga, St. James, to help with improvements to the third floor of the rectory at St. James Parish, Fr. Tom’s residence. This space has not been used in years and needs work to make it livable.
On Mission Moving Forward! We have finally arrived at the month and date with On Mission. After three years of attending planning meetings, reading news articles, and hearing information at Mass; Bishop Zubik’s implementation of On Mission for the Church Alive is here. This week we begin a new journey at St. James and across the entire Diocese of Pittsburgh as we begin working together with our neighboring parishes to combine resources, offer vibrant liturgies, and go out and serve those in need; to be the “Church Alive.”
The clinical label of being disabled ignores a dimension of personhood. That is we are created to be in relationship with others. In his encyclical John Paul II said “Within the family each member is accepted, respected and honored precisely because he or she is a person and if any family member is in greater need, the care which he or she receives is all the more intense and attentive.”
This Fall, we will be combining our Religious Education Program together with St. James and St. Charles Lwanga! The first session will take place on Sunday, August 26th from 9:00am to 9:50am.
This weekend, we celebrate the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. It is also “Respect Life” Sunday. The readings this weekend focus on relationships: a suitable partner, marriage, covenant and commitment.
Today’s Gospel gives us some fundamental ideas about committed marriage and family life. God never wants any of us to walk alone. Not only is He walking beside us, He has sent people to walk with us as well. Married life is without doubt related to this truth.
See page 6 for information of the Sacred Spaces Tour which includes St. James. There is also a schedule of performances. Dave Orme, former music director at St. James, is on the schedule.
